DLPA (DL-Phenylalanine) contains two forms of the amino acid phenylalanine. The "D" form is synthetically made to block a nervous system enzyme that amplifies pain signals. The "L" form is a natural substance found in protein-rich foods that bolsters the mood-elevating chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and nor epinephrine. These two elements combined help to quickly relieve minor depression and physical discomforts. DLPA appears to be most effective when combined with other natural antidepressants, such as St. John's Wart, raising both nor epinephrine and serotonin. DLPA can also help to relieve certain types of chronic pain, including muscle aches and persistent arthritis-related pain. DL-Phenylalanine is also used as a nutritional supplement for its putative analgesic and antidepressant activities.
